The Dublin Guitar Quartet is Ireland’s leading guitar ensemble. Their programmes are a very entertaining and palatable mix of music by the world’s leading composers, often inspired by indigenous music from around the globe. The quartet is entirely unique in its field and has been impressing audiences with their original arrangements of modern masterpieces by popular composers including Philip Glass, the legendary American composer with whom they shared the stage, performing his string quartets, Mishima and Company.
Their debut album, Deleted Pieces (2005) includes works by Henryk Gorecki, Kevin Volans, Leo Brouwer and the Redneck Manifesto. They are currently working on two new releases. The first is a Music Network/Arts Council funded recording of works by established and emerging Irish composers for classical guitar quartet. They have also recently completed mixing a recording of arrangements for electric guitar quartet by internationally established composers.
In 2004, RTÉ lyric fm broadcast a live performance by Dublin Guitar Quartet over two instalments of the ‘Horizons’ programme. This concert included a world premiere of Four Guitars by internationally acclaimed composer Kevin Volans. The composer became interested in the group on hearing their arrangement of a work he originally composed for New York’s Kronos Quartet and this inspired him to compose a radical new work for their repertoire.
The quartet has been successful in bringing new music to unlikely audiences, having played as guests of rock groups such as The Redneck Manifesto (Dublin) and Final Fantasy (Canada). They also gave the opening concert at the inaugural Guitar Festival of Ireland which included performances by John Williams and Louis Stewart. The quartet has performed in The National Concert Hall, Dublin City Hall and throughout the country.
The group was recently awarded €28,000 by the Arts Council of Ireland to facilitate commissions by international composers including New York’s Michael Gordon.

4 in a Bar is Ireland's leading barbershop quartet, being the proud 2008 and 2009 IABS National Champion Barbershop Quartet of Ireland, and winning the Silver Medal at the 2010 IABS International Barbershop Convention. They have also represented Ireland at European level competitions too (Eindhoven, 2009), the only Irish group to do so for many years. In recent years, they have been involved in a wide variety of activities: from performing for the President of Ireland at the Aras an Uachtarain, Dublin, to national and international TV coverage in commercials, to jingle recordings for RTÉ and other radio stations, international competitions and festival performances. They even had some involvement with the TV phenomenon X-Factor in 2010!
The Wilcollane Singers is a female voice choir formed in January 1989 under the direction of Anne Dunphy. Initially consisting of 12 singers, this has grown to approximately 35. As the founding members were from Wilton, Ballincollig and Ballyvolane in Cork city hence the name Wilcollane. Since its foundation, the choir has undertaken numerous performances and has distinguished itself at most of the major choral festivals and competitions throughout Ireland.
Cashel Arts Fest is delighted to welcome Cashel Community School Choir and The Ursuline School Choir (Thurles) to perform at this year’s festival.

Following last year’s highly enjoyable and interesting talk on Chopin, we have asked Ian Fox back again.
This year his subject is Franz Liszt, possibly the greatest pianist ever, born 200 years ago on October 22, 1811. In December 1840 Liszt arrived in Ireland at the head of a concert party. During the terrible winter weather they spent a month visiting Dublin, Cork, Clonmel, Limerick and Belfast. A detailed account of this extraordinary and hilarious tour exists and Ian Fox tells the story with recordings of some of the music he would have played.
Ian Fox has been presenting programmes on RTÉ radio and television for over 40 years. He was music critic of the Sunday Tribune for some 20 years and is Irish correspondent for Opera Magazine.
